Karuizawa Station


Karuizawa Station (軽井沢駅) is located in Karuizawa, Nagano prefecture. It is the main station for Karuizawa area, known as summer resort.

Karuizawa is very popular, especially for people in Tokyo area, as summer resort. It is the area with many holiday cottages/homes or vacation properties. Because it is easy to access from Tokyo area by Shinkansen or car, many people in Tokyo area visit Karuizawa for summer vacation.

There are many golf courses in Karuizawa. Therefore, many golfers visit Karuizawa to enjoy golfing from spring to fall.

Karuizawa is also popular in winter as there are ski resorts.

Karuizawa Station does not have JR local lines, but it is connected to Shinano Rialway Line. Here are available lines at Karuizawa Station.

Access

From Airport

It is not popular to access Karuizawa from airport. In Nagano prefecture, there is Shinshu Matsumoto Airport. However, it is not convenient to use this airport to access to Karuizawa as the airport is not close to Karuizawa and it takes time to access from the airport to Karuizawa.
To access by air, it maybe the best to fly to Haneda Airport in Tokyo and to take trains.

Shops and Restaurants

There is an outlet mall, Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza, in front of Karuizawa Station. At the outlet mall, there are many shops and restaurants as well as souvenir shops. There is a food court with many restaurants, too.

There are many hotels in Karuizawa and some of them can be access by walk. And, others can be accessed by shuttle buse or taxi.

Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto will be operated 3 minutes shorter

JR Hokkaido announced that it will operate Hokkaido Shinkansen faster than usual during the obon holidays, from August 12th, 2021 to August 16th, 2021. Currently, the fastest Shinkansen takes 3 hours 57 minutes from Tokyo Station to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station (or Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station to Tokyo Station). During the obon holidays in 2021, some Hokkaido Shinkansen will take 3 hours 54 minutes, 3 minutes less than the current fastest operation, between Tokyo Station and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. This time saving will be achieved by operating faster in the Seikan Tunnel, from 160 km/hour to 210 km/hour.  The same operation was done during the golden week holidays, from the end of April to the early May in 2021. This operation will be applied to in the total 14 trains, 7 trains from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and 7 trains from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Tokyo.
